Telnet is not the real RS232 connection, because you will see with RS232 first the loader mesages and so on. There is no telnet and no network at this time, telnet is "normal" network, mostly too late for finding problems if the image hangs.
EDIT: Example output real serial RS232:
I think you can see, that a real rs232 better is than telnet, because many things you can not see via telnet, because the network comes too late up.
